A. Lecture

The lectures are presented for two main topics as following :

a) Session I :"National Research Strategy for the Sound Management of Chemicals"
Dr. Choi, Kyunghee, Senior Research Scientist, National Institute of Environmental Research

This presentation covers the national research strategy for the management of chemicals in Korea, focused on persistent organic pollutants.

b) Session II : "Environmental Policy in Korea"
Mr. Kang, Seokwoo, Ministry of Environment

This session provides policy, organization, management of harmful chemicals for environment in Korea.


c) Session III : "Environment & POPs"
Dr. Park, Jongsei, President, LabFrontier Co., Ltd.

This session covers the basic concept, introduction, hazardous effect regarding human and environment for POPs. Also, international research and policy trend will be introduced.


d) Session IV : "POPs & Environmental Site Assessment"
Ms. Suk Mee-Hee, Senior Consultant, Eco solution Co., Ltd.

The presentation will examine the internationally recognized methodologies of environmental site assessment and present case projects where POPs are main areas of concern as to site contamination


e) Session V : "Environmental Toxicological Risk Assessment of Chemicals"
Dr. Kim, Yong-Hwa, Korea Institute of Toxicology

The training session covers the historical background of environmental problems caused by toxic chemicals, including pesticides and chemical wastes. Then, the basic principles of environmental toxicology and risk assessment follow as a proactive way of managing chemicals at the level of government. The last part of the session covers the practical and typical cases of the application of the risk assessment principle to real societal problems.


▣ Analytical technology & Evaluation For Environment


a) Session VI : "Quality Assurance and Quality Control for Environmental Monitoring"
Dr. Yoon, Hyeon, Korea Basic Science Institute

The goal of quality assurance (QA) is to ensure that all data be scientifically valid, defensible, and of known precision and accuracy. QA is a set of operating principles that, if strictly followed during sample collection and analysis, will produce data of known and defensible quality. Quality Control (QC) is a defined set-up and follow-through for carrying out quality assurance.
This lecture will cover step-by-step process of QA/QC for environmental monitoring.

b) Session VII : "Laboratory Automation System"
Mr. Paik, Jong-Woong, Young-In Scientific Co., Ltd.

This session will covers Presentation of 1) Trend of Lab Investment, 2) Laboratory Information Management System, and 3) Example of Automated Environmental Lab. Also, a small workshop will be held that can give trainees how they make plan and implement LIMS system

c) Session VIII : "Sample Preparation Technique using SPE (Solid Phase Extraction)"
Dr. Oh, Chang-Hwan, director of technical institute

Solid phase extraction technique is widely used for sample preparation. This session will cover the principle, application technique for environmental samples, and case studies.
